Fresh air and progress?!

I think it's safe to say that most, if not all, living things on Earth need oxygen to survive.I had left the container uncovered for about a day prior to sealing it and noticed that a lot of volume was lost to evaporation. After this discovery, Adam's container had been sealed for 23 hours of the day, being exposed to new air only when something was being added to the mixture. Needless to say, I was between a rock and a hard place. I would either deprive Adam of oxygen or be forced to lose him to evaporation. Instead, I took a reader's advice and put a small straw through the lid and into the container. This way, Adam will get at least some fresh air and won't dry up and die.I may be getting ahead of myself here and it may just be wishful thinking, but I would swear that I can see something taking shape in the middle of the mixture. It's hard to see in pictures and I did my best to capture it, but it looks like an opaque cloud is beginning to form around the little blob of mucus in the center of the container. It could just be remnants of my saliva or semen, but I'd at least like to think for a while that there could be some sort of protein forming, using the mucus as a nucleus.

You should have just poked holes in the top. With the straw you're still going to lose quite a bit of Adam to eveporation.

I think I'd lose just as much, if not more with holes right at the top of the container. What I'm hoping is that any moisture trying to escape through the straw will end up adhering to the straw and eventually going back into the mixture while letting Adam "breathe".

when do you think you'll start feeding Adam. everything needs food and nutrients to grow. what kind of food do you think you will be "feeding" to Adam?

this is simultaneously the most disgusting and brilliant experiment ever.

godspeed, anonymous

I don't really plan on feeding him anytime soon, not at this stage of his development.
For the time being, I think that blood and semen are enough. I don't want to start crumbling crackers into the container or anything, I don't want this project to turn into a cup of rotten food.

You should broadcast this on a webcam.

Sounds like it's already a cup of rotten food. Blood and semen is full of delicious nutrients for a hungry bacterium.

Don't know if your familiar with the concept but what your doing here reminds me of homunculus development, especially of the alchemical and spermist type. Maybe you could do a little research on the topic for ideas that might apply to your project. Google 'homunculus' for a start.

I know what an homonculus is. Creating a demon from parts of people, or something like that.
Regardless, it's just fantastical non-sense.
What you're looking at here is science and imagination, no magic involved.

I welcome your child in eager anticipation.

"What you're looking at here is science and imagination, no magic involved."

There isn't a single thing about this that is scientific, just a cup full of dead blood and sperm cells. What data have you collected? Have you developed a hypothesis? You say there is no magic involved but it sounds like your hoping for some with this unorganized mess. Imagination? Don't flatter yourself. Its a cup that you bled, jacked-off in, and gave a name. Not exactly ground breaking material here. If I didn't know any better, I would say this is an attempt to get attention, not anything useful or at all progressive.

BTW, what do you do for a living in the real world? My guess is dwelling in a basement. My best wishes to you and your cup of fail.

You idiot.

hmm, while fresh air is a good idea, I really don't think that a yet-undeveloped organism will need much oxygen, and if adam does crave it, adding a small hole will do. Remember, mold doesn't need much oxygen as we do.

Just thought you'd like to know that there are in fact, anaerobic bacteria/fungi out there. They're actually the most dangerous kinds.

Future'sFather said...

What do you mean by "out there"? Out where? And what kind of dangerous?

And, as I've said before, I'm not trying to grow mold exclusively, so I'm not going to worry about what is and isn't good for mold.

You should check it with a microscope to see if anything moves.

microscope sounds likes a good idea. i mean, bacteria is found everywhere, but who knows, you could discover something new.
or you could wait and let it develop a bit more.
just keep us up to date on what's going on

My definition of Homonculus is this: A creature that is created without contact between a sperm and an egg.

So really, this whole project is technically an attempt at Homonculus creation in itself. People back in the middle ages just associated them with magic.
